Crafting

Post by Niila »

Hi everyone!

Crafting is a topic of great interest to some people, while to others it sounds as boring as handiworks in real life. Regardless of this, it has been a thing in the works for the MUD for quite a long time, long before I even joined the MUD and I'd personally want to see it actually come implemented one of these days.

Now then, during the years crafting has been tried to be made working, yet the implementations have always fallen short due to one reason or another. Due to this, and perhaps mainly because of this, it's a project which has killed off the immortals working on it.

Now then, what I'd personally like to do is ask everyone, players and the staff alike, to evaluate the current way how the crafting system has been idealized as it is and how it works. I'd personally like the system to be something that actually encourages you, the players, to use the system and find it relatively useful for the time you invest in it. I'd also like to hear what could be improved in it if it falls short somewhere, and if you wish to help developing the processing of materials, we'd be more than happy to allow you to do so.

The next post in this thread will entail how far the system has been currently developed and how it functions as well as how the system has been envisioned to grow into fruition.

The basics
Crafting of any item consists of five distinct phases:
1) Gathering the materials
2) Refining the material
3) Crafting components
4) Creating a useful artefact from the components
5) Finishing the artefact to create a true masterpiece [masterwork items]

From these phases, one does not require any expertize in the field of crafting (1). All the others require the crafter to have some prior knowledge in order to be able to do something with the materials. That means that anyone is able to gather resources for the craftsmen, either for price or charity. It will require the appropriate tools to gather the resources, such as pick-axes for gathering ore from mines, or lumberjack axe to chop down trees.

Refining the materials(2) is a process that allows a novice crafter to 'fine' their skill with the material, allowing them to have a basic understanding of the material before they may make more useful components from it. In essence, it acts as a 'skill-upping' possibility to reduce the amount of 'stuff' required to create at the very beginning of reaching the ability to use a new material.

Crafting components(3) is a step in the crafting that is used to make pieces of the real work piece. This step consists, for example, for a sword to create the handle, the guard of the sword, and the blade. These also require a recipe (which can be attained without any cost) to craft the item that they want to craft (this is to make certain you don't do the 'wrong item' for some certain recipie and lose the materials thanks to it).

The final step of normal crafted items is crafting the actual artefact(4) is the final step of crafting for a object. In it, the pieces are combined together to create a whole, complete object which is the handiwork of the crafter.

There's an additional step for items that go beyond the norm, those that are truly a work of art. This phase is called finishing the artefact(5). This phase is only available to items that are of good quality and allow the crafter to change the descriptions, aliases and even naming the weapons in some fashion to be custom.

Stats
Items that have stats (such as weapons, armor, clothing) have stats based on the tier of the object. There are ten different tiers of objects, atleast in the current plan, where in every second tier reduce the weigh of the object, and every odd increase the stats (damage, absorption, dodge/parry bonus). This will give a reason to attempt getting crafting higher and provide (hopefully) a reason to count in the services of a crafter for such items.

Items that are tier five or higher are considered masterwork, and they may be custom tailored by the crafter to have unique descriptions. Tier 5 and higher items are considered the same as mini-smob items in terms of usefulness, with the last tier being items of One Power make. Those that fall between are equal to more difficult smob items.

Certain items may require reagents from smobs in order to make, to make them more valuable both in terms of avaibility and rarity.

Most recipies will be available to all crafters, with only specific few that require you to explore and find them out for yourself. One Power crafted items are items in this cateogory, for example, as will Angreal be.
