In the time before the Dawn

Post by Vierna »

The Weave Weaves as it Wills they say. The rumours speak of the gruesome things that the Shadowspawn have done as of late, yet there has been no rumours of the Light prevailing in battles. But hidden in the sight, there are events that are untold, for one reason or another.

This is but a glimpse of what occurs sometimes, but is almost never spoken of. Let the Light guide those who walk upon such a path.

On a Dirty Track
Passing between many poorly built and maintained buildings, the track presses
on east and west. The buildings are evidently the houses of the less wealthy
in Braem, and though they are no shorter than most, their condition is a marked
contrast. The few with plastered walls are spiderwebbed with cracks and are
more mud-brown than plaster-white. Their roofs are pierced with negligence,
allowing rain, light and draughts in. Their pitiful front and backyards are no
more than strips of trampled grass, most lacking even wilted trees or leafless
shrubbery. Standing out amidst the gaunt buildings is a glove's store to the
south. It is a small building with a large, cluttered storefront window.

A T-Junction Along the Battered Track
Forming a precise T-junction with a narrower path, the track sprawled out
before you leads straight through the town of Braem. As expected from most
small, roadside towns, Braem is of modest wealthy, with most of its buildings
squat and poorly decorated. The few stacked two or three levels high are major
landmarks, their roofs seeming to glow with pride. High or low, the buildings
continue their march along the edges of either roadway, forming an effective
bricked-walled gorge for the traffic passing through. Looking along the path
west, it becomes clear that the buildings in that direction are poorer than
those along here. To the north, the pathway ambles towards the town's center,
while to the south it slips out through the southern limit of the town and
crawls up the slope of a rise.

On a Battered Track Near a Smithy
The smell and sounds of a smithy comes from a large, bricked building to the
east. Water barrels rest before its front entryway, placed to hold back
massive, wooden doors. Stealing a peek inside, you can see the smithy
manufactures a wide variety of shields and swords. Smoke escapes from the
smithy's three large vents, creating a greyish-white plume over its slate roof.
On either side of the large building are the houses of the townsfolk. They,
along with a mirrored, opposing side, lead the traffic north and south.
Following the path north will take you towards the town's center, while to the
south stand the southern limit of Braem.

Southern Limit of Braem
This is the southern limit of Braem, with the majority of the town's bricked
buildings resting along the northern horizon. The track that lies underfoot
cuts through the middle of town, leading north into the town center, and south
of here to meet up with the Tar Valon Road. As one might expect of a busy
highway, both Braem's main road and the Tar Valon Road are scarred with use and
weathered to rock-hardness. A short distance to the south, the road begins to
mount a grassy hill, spliting it as it did the town in the north. Around the
hill, the thick and shadowy forests of Braem Woods are visible, spreading into
the distance like an ocean of greenery.

Crest Looking Down on a Small Town
Striped with the broad track before you, the grassy hill underfoot offers an
unequaled view of the town sprawled out at its foot to the north. The town is
of a generic sort, with low buildings topped with thatched or slate roofs, and
roads narrow but well used. A charming aura envelopes the town utterly, like
some invisible force that seems to slow time down and wash away the burdens of
a busy world. Beyond the town, the wilderness races up to accost the eye, with
trees and shrubbery creating an impossibly thick quilt over the rolling
landscape. The greenery disappears into the horizon, seeming to touch the sky
to define a contrasting line. An almost mirrored image is portrayed to the
south, with Braem Woods spreading away.

The Base of a Hill West of the Road
At the foot of a low, but dominating hill, the far off horizonss are denied to
you. What can be seen around the hill is vague, as screens of green extending
from the nearby forest are in abundance. Though hidden from view, a human
settlement is not far off, as the aromas of home cooked meals and hickory logs
is strong in the air. The town's warm scents clash sharply with the tang of
the woods to the west. From the forest comes the tang of pines and
wildflowers, and of sourgums and oaks. There, concealed under its layered
canopy and dense foliage, animals fill the air with chirps, songs and calls.

End of a Deer Trail
Forming a wall of leaves and branches, the forest to the north is impassable.
Vines roped around and hanging from branches are everywhere. They weave a web
as intricate and mysterious as one spun by a spider. Because of the density of
the foliage, much of the forest floor is submerged in darkness, which denies even
the hardiest of creepers life. Instead of a carpet of green, the floor is
painted the brown and orange of fallen leaves and twigs. Slithering to an end
here, a broad but faint deer trail continues to the west. The forest thins out
to the east and south.

A Deer Trail in Medium Woods
With the foliage of the forest obscuring much of the horizon, the nearby trees
and shrubs are the focus points of the scenery. The woods are of a mixed
variety, with leatherleafs, blackgums, pines and alders spreading leaf and
branch in every direction. At their foot, shrubs fountain green, orange and
brown in a riot of colors, most of them sporting flowers and berries. Heard
like an incessant hum, the noises of the forest are as enveloping as the
greenery. The call of birds drift through the soft breezes, while the rustle
of leaves and the comical chattering of squirrels announce a brimming
atmosphere. Barely noticeable in contrast to the rest of the scenery, a deer
trail lies underfoot. It leads east and west, swallowed by leafy boughs in
both directions.

A Deer Trail through Braem Woods
Patted down through years of animal passings, the deer trail before you is one
of many. Narrow or broad, the pathways of the forest snake around the
labyrinth of trees in every which way. Some of the narrower ones descend into
animal dens and burrows, while the broader ones weave an intricate tapestry
across the forest floor. Overhead, a beautifully layered canopy weaves a
similar sort of tapestry, stitching with branch and twig rather than trails.
The forest extends to the north and east, following an exceptionally broad deer
trail. The woods to the south and west are too thick to pass.

A Deer Trail through the Woods
Proud and majestic trees sprout from the leafy forest floor, spraying every
color of nature into the scenery. Their branches and spidery twigs have been
woven into a canopy overhead, which draw patterned shadows everywhere. Many
shrubs can be seen sporting about the ground, but not enough to hinder passage
in any direction. Leatherleafs, bearing the tough foliage that spawned their
name, stand to the north. A faint deer trail patted down through generations
of animals lies underfoot, and leads west and south. The woods to the east are
considerably more sparse, and offer a view of a small town, nestled deep in
the heart of Braem Woods.

A grey squirrel leaves south.
End of a Deer Trail
Noticeable only in contrast to the thick, almost solid mesh of undergrowth, a
faint trail slithers to an end at this point. A few hoof prints have been
patted onto the narrow trail, indicating that it is a passage used by the
forest animals. Hemming the snaking trail, trees spreading thick and leafy
boughs rise majestically into the sky. They are of a vast variety, with leaves
of every hue, and trunks of every texture. At their base, shrubs fountain dark
leaves and pretty flowers. The shrubbery is thick, and has sealed off passage
to the south and west. Following the trail east will bring travelers deep into
Braem Woods. The thick foliage of the forest offers a poor view of what lies
to the north.

The Southern Edge of the Platform
A solid chest high wall lines the eastern side of the platform, ending its
progress northwards in a jagged gap simulated by the northern half of the
platform leaving nothing but an ominous shroud of darkness in its place. A
wall lined path of pale white stone circles precariously around the missing
section aiming to west. A pair of thick pillars form the trunks of a large
arch, layered with silvery designs from the ground stretching well above a
man's height where it is engulfed by the ever-present shadow. Sitting on the
edge at the center of the platform, oblivion to the northeast and cobblestones
circling the rest, a large stone post stands out covered in layer upon layer of
some silvery script pitted and beginning to lose its clarity under the taint.

At the Summit of the Ramp
A large platform spreads northwards from the summit of the cobbled ramp where
more then a span away from the edge it degenerates into nothing more then a
writhing wall of shadow from which thin tendrils roam apart. Covered with

A Curve in the Walled Bridge
The cobbled pathway curves away from the wide dais to the south, to gradually
descend eastwards, slowly becoming enveloped by the gloomy shadows. High walls
of broken and pitted stone form the northern and western sides, a flowing scene
of vines and leaves is carved into the stones once ivory surface. Along the
northwest corned, a section of the cobbled stones has fallen into the void,
leaving a hole nearly a span wide yet the surrounding wall remains intact.

A cobbled pathway nearly four spans across leads north away from the small wall
lined dais spreading to the south. A small shadowed gap mars the eastern wall
where a small section of mortar has crumbled to gray dusty allowing a series of
cubic stones to cascade into the voided topheth below. Into the western wall

almost lifelike friezes which seem to sway gently in some imaginary breeze.

Northern Edge of the Cobbled Dais
The wide platform stretches in a wall lined and cobblestone paved path to the
east while southward a jagged edge leads into the void of darkness.
Connecting under a thick pillared arch, a bridge meanders northwards into the
darkness, leaving merely an ivory white path through a midnight cloud.
Westward, a small space in the pitted white wall allows passage to a small
saucer shaped dais, which holds a dull reflective wall in its center. A thin
pole stretches like a spire towards the shrouded heavens above, covered from
base to summit with layer upon layer of flowing silver script.

The Decaying Rim
A jagged and pitted wall forms a chest high barrier along the northern edge of
the cobbled platform, masterfully etched vines intertwining with leaves of
every known kind cover nearly every inch of exposed stone. Eastward a gap in
the wall allows access to a spiraling ramp that descends into cloying darkness.
Small paths lead to the west and south around a fallen section of the extensive

fading silver script flowing from base to summit. Upward, nearly hidden in the
darkness, spreads the outlined base of an elongated ivory stoned path.

A jagged line of cobblestones rings the edge of the platform, small gaps mar
the once perfect edge where the mortar has worn away enough to allow the
cobblestones to fall away into the darkness below. From the eastern side of
the platform, a wide ramp of pale stones descends into the grasp of darkness.
The jagged edged boundary of the platform spreads to the north and west around
a raised dirt filled platform. Leafless and barren gray trees, branches
drooped and lifeless, grow above the thin blanket of scraggly, blackened grass
that fills the center of the raised platform. The leafless trees and grass
crumble at the slightest movement, ground to a dust that seems to fade before
it reaches the ground, leaving no trace of its ever having existed. A post

Darkness blankets the bridge on all sides, the stone's pale gray-pitted surface
emanating the shadows of the surrounding void. Lining the northern and western
sides, a chest high stone wall of wavy, curving lines and swirling designs
stretches forth from the ramp. The faint outline of a stone dais spreads
nearly four spans above the bridge. Flake by flake, the pale stone dais seems
to visibly decay, mortar rotting under the tainted shadow until sections of
stone fall to vanish into the gloomy depths. Any support for the dais is
either hidden by the shadowed void or perhaps, like the rest of the Ways,
disregards the Creator's rules, leaving possibilities too insane to comprehend.

A Cobbled Pathway
Shadows wreath the small cobbled path, which extends towards a small crescent
dais to the west, in the center of which a low wall dully reflects the
surrounding shadows while pure oblivion lies to the east and west of it. The
southern half of the platform is missing. Whether it decayed flake by pale
flake or the mortar had ground to dust under the taint of the ways, letting the
whole area collapse at once, it nevertheless leaves a jagged edge unguarded by
the usual stone wall heavily etched in living fauna. Eastward, a tall post
rises from the cobblestones to reach like a silvery script covered spire
towards the heavens. Beyond the spire, shadow envelops the wide platform
degenerating it into a faint outline of pale stone.

The Descent into the Shadows
The top of a thick archway glistens with silvery, swirling lines and wavy
circles along it's curving top. A cobbled ramp leads a pitted and dusty
pathway downward lined on the east and west by chest high, pale ivory walls of
etched stone. A heavy gloom shrouds the wide pathway, carrying on it the faint
tinge of almost imperceptibly defiled. The pallid stone of the walls and
cobbled ramp, all are pitted and flaking as if a giant hand was gripping them,
crushing bit by bit, letting stone after stone fall into the oblivion below.

Atop the Swiftly Declining Ramp
The cobbled ramp leads southward as it descends into the gloomy depths, where
through the heavy shroud below, a faint outline of pale stone appears.
Upwards, a cobbled platform stretches westwards away from where it connects
with the ramp along an unadorned eastern edge. Tall, chest high walls line the
eastern and western sides of the ramp, pale stoned lengths heavily etched with
flowing leaves and vines. Wide gaps mar the walls where pale mortar has
crumbled to dust letting pitted stones fall into the dismal void below.

In all directions arches surround you. The once bright arches show signs of
the foul miasma that has infested the ways in thier tarnished and decayed
facings. The same ncient and seemingly impenetrable stone found in the rest of
the Ways forms the platform upon which you find yourself, however even these
durable stones show traces of decay. Benches stand in a ring a short distance

Flowing Ogier carvings cover the arches and benches while the central stone is

The jagged edged boundary of the platform spreads to the north and west around

that fills the center of the raised platform. The leafless trees and grass
crumble at the slightest movement, ground to a dust that seems to fade before

At the Summit of the Ramp
A wide cobbled pathway descends as it advances westward, low walls fanning out
to the north and south the farther it progresses into the shadowy depths. A
sort of wide, ivory stoned platform spreads to the east, canopied by the
ever-present blanket of night above. A dingy white wall, extends parallel to
the pathway seeming to enfold it like a guardian barrier fighting a losing
battle against the writhing evil surrounding it. A small section of the
southern wall bears a masterfully detailed carving of a golden-scaled serpent
coiling in and around a sculpted wheel like yarn around a spool.

Nearing the Height of the Ramp
A wide oval surrounds the summit of the cobbled ramp, lined with a chest high
wall of heavily carved stone acting as a inadequate barrier against the
enshrouding gloom. Thin tendrils of blackened midnight roam slowly over the
surface of the ivory stones, leaving a scorched and pitted mess where once
beauty spread. A wide pathway leads eastward, stretching from the ramp to
disappear into the curtain of darkness beyond. As if the overhanging cloud of
perpetual night weights more than an ocean, the cobbled pathway is webbed with
hairline cracks and in some places long gaps where mortar has crumbled to dust.

A Stone Bridge over the Shadowy Depths
Two pillars, the black stone nearly as dark as the shadows writhing around its
surface, stretch forth from the intersection of the ascending ramp and the
cobbled platform to the east. The ramp with its pale squared cobblestones
spread westward where the darkness engulfs it, like a mist of liquefied night,

The dim outline of a wide circle of stone stretches unsupported nearly four

Along A Decaying Pathway
A cobbled pathway nearly four spans across leads north away from the small wall
lined dais spreading to the south. A small shadowed gap mars the eastern wall
where a small section of mortar has crumbled to gray dusty allowing a series of
cubic stones to cascade into the voided topheth below. Into the western wall

almost lifelike friezes which seem to sway gently in some imaginary breeze.

descend eastwards, slowly becoming enveloped by the gloomy shadows. High walls
of broken and pitted stone form the northern and western sides, a flowing scene

A Stone Bridge over the Shadowy Depths
Two pillars, the black stone nearly as dark as the shadows writhing around its
surface, stretch forth from the intersection of the ascending ramp and the
cobbled platform to the east. The ramp with its pale squared cobblestones
spread westward where the darkness engulfs it, like a mist of liquefied night,
until only a faint outline is left. A chest high stone wall of pale, ivory
white, stone lines the ramp on the northern and southern sides. The stones of
the pathway and the bordering walls are pitted and flaking as if the very stone
is rotting under the shadowy taint covering the eternal expanse of the Ways.
The dim outline of a wide circle of stone stretches unsupported nearly four
spans above the bridge as if no laws of the common world govern here.

At the Pinnacle of an Ancient Ramp
Surrounded by darkness, so black that it seems to have never known the warm
caress of light, the cobblestone ramp levels off to meet a corner of a platform
nearly engulfed in the same void that surrounds the ramp. Cobblestones made
from smooth sided blocks of pale granite each emit a dull resonating thud when

colorless mortar that neither tools nor nonexistent weather can dent, yet time

The ramp begins to ascend rapidly as it continues father to the south with
chest high walls on the eastern and western sides. A mist of seemingly

Thick walls ivory stone border the ramp on all sides except the southern where
the ramp ascends as it nears the vertex and the connection point with a cobbled
path. Thick friezes, pitted and slowly disintegrating, are etched into every
exposed inch of the pale stone walls. Stone vines intertwine around curling
leaves and images of animals. One animal seems to stretch forth from the
stones more so than the others, a sort of giant bird with its wings unfurled

darkness, writhing like a serpent, seems to enfold the ramp clenches ever so
slowly causing the stones to slowly crumble into the oblivion below.

At the Southern Base of the Arcing Bridge
The arcing bridge gradually levels off until it connects with an expansive
platform to the south. Thick walls of blackened ivory stone line the eastern
and western sides of the bridge, which extends to the north where it bends into
the overhanging shroud of darkness. Intermittent relief's of imaginary animals
are etched into the walls, one portrays a giant stalking cat with long curving
tusks roaring at some unseen foe, another shows an enormous feathered bird with
wings outstretched wings soaring high within the clouds.

A Curve in the Cobbled Bridge
The bridge connecting along the southern edge to a wide platform hidden in
shadows while the bridge bends and rises to the east. The bridge is lined on
both sides with a chest high wall of ivory stone heavily etched with
intertwining flora and fauna that seems to sway on an imaginary breeze. The
cobbled bridge resembles the criss-cross pattern of a stone's board, where pale
ivory cobblestones form the white squares and area's where the stones have
fallen into the shrouded void below form the black.

A Northward Bend in the Bridge
The arcing cobblestone bridge crests in the midst of its north-west bend,
leaving a downward slope into the shroud of darkness in both directions.
Chest high walls of once pristine ivory stone line the southern and eastern
walls, although a large section has crumbled away eastern wall to fall into the
gloomy void beyond, leaving a jagged puzzle where once a masterfully etched
mural of leaves and vines stretched. A cobbled platform sits at the end of the
bridges descending arc to the north, merely the outline of the pale stones
concealed by the ever-writhing darkness constricting upon the Ways.

of shadowed oblivion spreads along the southern edge of a row of jagged stones
